I saw this Aldo add (well not this one exactly) a few times and each time I passed by it I thought that I really wanted to make it.

(Sorry for the confusing image, it was the only one I could find of the dress)

Once I found the right fabric (a soft rayon, that flows blissfully in the wind) I quickly made this up.

I feel a little unoriginal by coping the pattern but is anyone these days? Plus I changed mine a bit so there...

We Do Acid Like it Ain't No Thang

Yesterday we decided to acid wash some clothes. If you ever make the same decision its pretty easy, it just may not necessarily come out the way you want it to!

All you really need is bleach and a spray bottle (or any other application implement), also maybe some gloves (bleach is corrosive to the skin...duh).

Every Spring I find myself faced with the same problem, amazing weather after a terrible winter, and a closet full of clothes with nothing to wear. Instead of throwing everything out and starting a fresh is it easier (and less costly) to try to look at old clothes with new eyes.

I combed through my closet trying to understand why certain things just don' t strike my fancy anymore. Last year I photographed myself in this dress for a style competition and won. But I never actually ended up wearing it that often. This is not an edition of Frump To Fabulous because it is not frumpy, I just lost interest. So like rekindling an affair with an old flame I tried to spice things up a bit and revamp an old look.

Once again not actually cutting up something owned by my Granny. But this is also for that Environmental fashion show we are taking part in. I guess you can see my theme... granny. I have decided this is my theme for life. I attribute everything I do to being a granny, what I eat, how I dress and especially if my old bones are acting up. Maybe when I am actually a granny I will relive my youth and be a real bad ass granny who acts like she's in her 20's. I think that is when I will get a tattoo. Maybe I'll get a mohawk. Making Skirt Suits from Granny's Afgan

No, I don't think I could cut up anything that my grandmother would knit me. But then again, besides maybe some mittens from my childhood that have long since been lost, she hasn't really knit me anything.

The crazy looking knitted material for this little number was happily discovered at Value Village. I'm not sure if this will become a regular staple to my wardrobe (maybe the jacket). It is actually for an "Environmental" Fashion Show that me and Wong Ling Ling are in. Stay tuned for more recycled clothing as we slowly pump them out.

Puffed Muffs and Purple Apparel

Yesterday, to my great excitement I was given a muff! I had been thinking that it would be cool to own one ever since I got this huge Lady Coat. It is the type of coat that you should wear with gloves rather than mittens, which I am not used to and find to be not quite as warm. Anyways, now I shall feel super ladylike and tres fancy walking down the streets. I hope I can pull it off!
Also after buying my extremely large Lady coat (for $10!!!) I realized that all my winter wear was purple! I'm not normally such a fan of uniform colour but maybe if I wear too much colour it will make me look more ridiculous then I already do.

But on a side note, have you heard about people who wear all uniform colour?
Awhile back I read an article in New York Magazine about people who obsessively only wear the same colour. Every piece of clothing in their closet the same... wouldn't that get boring after awhile?

I can't decide if I like the coat belted or open. Any suggestions?
I feel like a behemoth in it sometimes...

The thing I love most about autumn weather is layering, and I get to give every lonely cardi (no, not carny) in my closet a chance to shine! Most of mine are preloved from Poppy(my grams). Those leaves were wet by the way, that's how dedicated we are!

Japanese school children all have to wear uniforms, and boy are they the cutest uniforms that I have ever seen. While in Japan I became obsessed with the adorable sailor outfits that I would see pass me by on clusters of giggling girls. In a Tokyo flea market I found these amazing man sailor loafers and upon my return I made this sailor inspired dress. Sadly I have not worn the shoes as they are a little too wide, and not very comfortable. I was thinking of giving them away, but before I do I have to have documented evidence that I own such stupendous shoes. So all aboard lets sail away!

A boy obsessed with death, plans numerous mock suicides to capture his mother’s attention. Harold meets Maude, a 79-year-old optimist with a buoyant, fun-loving attitude, who sees the things in life worth living for. Harold falls in love.

I had the idea for this photo shoot for a while and then recently the fabulous gal over at The Cherry Blossom Girl did a shoot in Maude’s honour. I guess this movie is just very inspirational.

Spotlight on Beacon's Closet

Okay, this is the last post about New York. I swear. I had a chance to visit a few vintage shops while in NY, and Beacon's Closet, located in Williamsburg (another location in Park Slope), seemed to have the most hype. As we walked towards it, we past many a trendy lookin' girl toting the bright pink bags, with the strange looking bald headed man sporting thick rimmed glasses, plastered on the side. I did find it to be a bit pricey but I'm a kind of cheap, and its New York, which is expensive all round. But it was also overwhelming in terms of the selection. The place is huge and one could spend hours there looking for that perfect find.
The cool thing about Beacon's Closet is that you can trade in your old clothes for cash or store credit (if they are valued/wanted). I think this is one of the best parts about vintage/thrift is the recycling of clothes, but also of ideas. Things come into and out of vogue in both society and ones own personal style, it is a constant cycle.

While in the East village of New York city my friend and I came across this store. Sadly I have forgotten the name but I know that its on 1st avenue. While the vintage clothing and accessories they carried were of average selection and price, their boot selection was amazing! I had to restrain myself from buying them all. (Well those that fit) Toronto is sadly lacking in such a terrific vintage shoe selection (or perhaps I have just not found a store that has such a fabulous selection of shoes, for such thrifty prices.)

Now when I leave the house I feel real fancy, as my heels click along the pavement. Feeling like a million bucks only costs $35. (Thats for both pairs by the way)

Circus Freaks & Zombie Hipsters (Halloween CONT'D)

Because my lovely dinosaur was out of town for Halloween, I had to scrounge up some way of salvaging my circus slut costume without just being, well, a circus slut. Thanks to my exceptional skills, I transformed Bretty Boo into a circus freak as well (showmaster?)!

I adjusted my costume a bit, i.e. I really just wanted a reason to wear my new corsette from Ego. Didn't get rid of that pelvic pin though!

As Calvin Harris just loves to sing: “It was Acceptable in the 80’s.” So too was this lovely vest. A couple years ago I thought it was one of the ugliest things known to man. But now that I have discovered it once again in my mother's closet, I am just looking for an occasion to steal it and wear it out of the house.
Everyone said that the 80’s would never be back, eat your words naysayers, this trend is currently in its prime. My greatest fear is that the next trend will be the 90s (my actual most despised era of fashion/clothes. But I will probably be eating my words too in a few months when this trend hits too).

What is the favourite holiday for two girls who love to dress up??? HALLOWEEN!!! It should really be a month long affair of dressing in something different every day/ weekend.

As Rusty will be away for Halloween (in New York!) It was imperative that we see each other beforehand and of course have some sort of costume collaboration. Rusty had already started making her dinosaur costume. Hence dinosaur rider was born!

I didn't think I was going to our favorite Winestock's party, so I had to last minute scrounge up something! Thanks to my mother's gaudy brooch, an old swimsuit and a couple of things I found here and there in my always messy room, this is what I came up with. A dinosaur rider? A circus slut? Who cares, I looked good!

I got mah shoesies from my g-ma, my jade pendant from my mama, my hooters tank top* from Rusty's garbage, my high-rise Cheap Mondays from this store I used to work at in Kensington (CPUB) and my hat from Urban Outfitters (where I work now). So overall, discount city.

A couple weeks ago I came home and my mother greeted me with an excited glint in her eye. “Have I got something for you!” She said to me. She took me back to the kitchen, where she quickly produced this gorgeous beaded Mexican top. I could not believe my luck— How on earth could I be in possession of such a lovely thing? Turns out that one of her clients was cleaning out her closet, and asked my mum if she wanted a few things. My mum almost said no! Thankfully she didn’t or I would never have been able to make an acquaintance with this beaded wonder. It’s so lovely I’m afraid to wear it outdoors.

You know that ugly sweater that you bought months ago, but just can’t stand throwing out because it was so damn expensive? Well lucky for you, clothing swapping is becoming the hip new hobby for compulsive shoppers like yourself. Long popular in Montreal, clothes swapping parties are when strangers (and friends) get together and trade pre-loved goodies. It’s a two-in-one: shopping (for FREE) and getting rid of all your junk! (Though there is a small charge, it is only to cover the venue rental costs.)

This weekend is the second edition of “Swap— Don’t Shop.” At the last one in August, we interviewed the gal who puts it all together.

“I really wanted to go to a clothing swap this summer and I just couldn’t find that many, so I decided to start my own,” says Hope Sinclair, about her clothing swap parties. Toronto Street Fashion and Mercer Union have also thrown clothing swap parties in our lovely city, but there was just no regularity until now, with Hope’s plan for bi-monthly swaps. Working for Dress Your Best in the past, she aims to help the community in a stylish manner, by donating all leftover clothing to charities (the last event’s went to Oasis Clothing Bank).

With snackies available and oodles of funky pieces to dig through, we were amazed at how well-organized and beautifully arranged everything was. From aquamarine ultra-suede trench-coats to chunky metal bangles, items were organized categorically on individual tables. It truly felt like I was stealing from a store! Make sure you get early though, cause those neatly folded piles quickly get sifted through and messy!

Frump to Fabulous: Romper Edition

I got this fabulous number just over a month and a half ago at the back-to-school, half-off Value Village sale. I was scoffed at for purchasing it but I knew that it was simply a gem in the making. By completely restructuring this unique piece I transformed it into one of my favourite things to wear. Thank you once again to VV Boutique!

Greta Constantine

The other night I went to the Greta Constantine Fashion Show. Greta constantine is a collaborative designer and stylsit duo. They are up and coming in Toronto, and have recently been featured in Vogue and Elle Magazine. These clothes are not necessarily something I would be inclined to wear, as I hate to leave the house not sporting a pattern or two (or three), but I respect them all the same. The thing that I like about their garments is that they use very simple jersey fabric, and are able to create very interesting shapes and construction. It makes for simple, yet elegant pieces.

This dress is my favourite of the bunch, of course it is the worst picture that I took.

Extended summer Thanksgiving

These pictures are a re-post from our old blog location. I felt it was appropriate for the lovely extended summer weather we are having. Yet it still has that fall type feel of harvest, farm, leaves etc. Very excited for my favourite season! Prettiest colours on the trees, best foods in my tummy (squash, yams, pumpkin pie) and the perfect weather for lots of layers, cozy sweaters, tights and silky scarves. All with the sun still stickin around! Sadly it seems always to be the shortest season, followed abruptly by winter.

Rusty likes: Japanese Fashion!

This past summer I spent a month living in Tokyo. During that month I had quite the exposure to the Japanese fashion lifestyle. It felt like everyday without any intention to do so, I would end up in some sort of store and mainly it was for clothes. Two Tokyo labels that really caught my eye were: Ne-net and Merci Beaucoup. They both have some really outrageous looking clothes, and really interesting shapes. SO if you ever happen to be moseying around the streets of Tokyo with nothing to do (impossible) then try checking them out. Here are a few samples from their most recent collection.

We found these hideous granny flood pants at a local clothing swap, but we knew deep down, with a few minor adjustments, they would be a fabulous new addition to WongLingLing's wardrobe. With just a simple hem, she went from drowning to darling!

Jump for Joy! Jumpers are Back!

If any of you were forced into those scratchy old jumpers during your catholic middle school days, I think you'd understand my bittersweet take on this new fashion phenomenon. While academia is quickly slipping into every girl's wardrobe (thanks to shows like Gossip Girl- which doesn't do the book justice by the way), it is hard not to have a staple like a jolly jumper!!

I like jumpers in plaid, I like jumpers with cutouts, I like jumpers my mother made in home EC class. How do you like your jumpers? Short and cute? Long and matronly? (Though I don't think that would count as a jumper anymore.....)

Remember that movie The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants? Remember when they made a second one and you watched it in theatres, even though you hated the first one, because your friends paid your way? Remember when you bought a pair of sisterhood jeans, so that you could have "Miracles Happen" and "A bond like sister's do"?

Or was that just me? My BFFAE and Rusty's BF Brett Winestock and I share that special bond. We celebrated it a month ago, by making that important purchase. We came across our beautiful pair, a little grass-stained and pre-loved, at a garage sale in Kensington. We got our sweet sisterhood for only $2!
